Age: 13

Spoken language(s): English

History: I could be your zoomer.

Personality: Max Mayfield isn't your normal 13 year old girl. She doesn't care about clothes or fashion or hair, or any "typical" girlie things society expects girls to care about. She'd rather fall off her skateboard than be caught dead in a dress, and she'd rather play video games than paint her fingernails. She does, however, draw the line when it comes to holding slimy pollywogs. She'd much rather not do that. Max refers to herself as a "Zoomer" because she zooms around on her skateboard as her main method of transportation. This comes up again later in the season when she drives her brother's car at very high speeds to help her newfound friends.

She arrives in Hawkins, Indiana, from Sunny California, with her mom, stepdad Neil, and stepbrother Billy, who is the bane of Max's existence. Billy bullies her constantly, putting her down, intimidating her, grabbing her, breaking her things when she doesn't obey him. Domestic violence in the household is strongly indicated, not just from Billy to Max, but from Neil to Billy, as well. (Season 2, Episode 9, "The Gate.") She walks on eggshells around Billy, and she does her best not to exhibit her fear of him. All of this has impacted Max's life a great deal, making her defensive, skeptical, and lonely.

Max doesn't hesitate in speaking her mind in most situations - or in using casual sarcasm and sass as a way of keeping people from getting too close. When she first meets Dustin and Lucas, and they invite her to go trick-or-treating with them, Dustin comments that they thought she'd want in on that. She arches her eyebrows and responds, "Well that's presumptuous of you." She then proceeds to walk away, even if she does end up meeting up with the party to trick-or-treat, scaring the crap out of them as she jumps out of the bushes dressed as Michael Myers (Season 2, Episode 2, "Trick or Treat, Freak.")

She has a difficult time trusting people, even exhibiting doubt when Lucas Sinclair tells her that Will Byers was lost in the woods for a week the year before. She doubts Lucas' sincerity of wanting to be her friend repeatedly - for example when the party doesn't tell her about the Upside Down and what's going on with Will - she asserts that despite the guys (sans Mike Wheeler) saying they wanted to be her friends, all they do is treat her like garbage. (Season 2, Episode 4, "Will the Wise.") When Lucas finally does fill her in -- telling her about everything that happened the previous year and that knowing about it is dangerous, she's certain he's made it all up in order to try and impress her and challenges him to prove what he's saying to be true (Season 2, Episode 5, "Dig Dug.")

Despite her suspicious nature and tendency to hold people at arm's length, Max really wants nothing more than to be accepted by the party and have her own friends, and to not be alone anymore. She asks Mike at one point why he hates her so much. When he tells her he doesn't, that he just thinks she's annoying and the party doesn't need anyone else in it, Max tells him she could be their Zoomer, and circles around him on a skateboard, trying to convince him to let her in. (Season 2, Episode 3, "The Pollywog.")

She has a softer side, which really shows itself when she's on top of a trailer with Lucas in the junkyard, and she tells him that her brother has always been a jerk, but for awhile now, he's been angry all the time. She admits that because Billy can't take his anger out on her mother, he takes it out on her instead, even tearing up and then quickly wiping the tears away because she's embarrassed to be talking so honestly and she's afraid she seems weak. He reassures her it's okay and that she's nothing like her brother. She then admits that she likes talking to him (Season 2, Episode 6, "The Spy.") This side presents again in a later episode, as she's trying to talk to Mike, telling him she understands why Eleven was the party's Mage. She smiles and her voice softens as she tries once again to befriend him, as he's the only party member who hasn't yet really accepted her presence. (Season 2, Episode 8, "The Mind Flayer.")

She does eventually stand up for herself against Billy - compelled to do so when her stepbrother is beating the hell out of the group's newfound older friend/babysitter Steve Harrington. She jams a syringe loaded with a sedative into his neck, drugging him til he can't fight anymore and he drops onto the ground. She then picks up Steve's nail bat and threatens him with it until he agrees to leave her and her friends alone from then on. She steals his car keys and drives Lucas, Mike, Dustin, and Steve, to the tunnels where they all go to act as bait for the demogorgans/demodogs so that Eleven can close the gate to the Upside Down, thus proving her loyalty and bravery in big ways, twice in a very short time span. (Season 2, Episode 9, "The Gate.")
