Oh, honey, don't worry about your mom. She was in a very difficult position. I told her I'd keep an eye on you while she tried to find work. We're trying to reach her now with the good news. Do you want me to give her a message?

[ She doesn't know if it's kinder to tell Max the truth, or to try to protect her from her mother's callousness. Hopper has spent the last few weeks hearing Joyce go off about a woman who could leave her daughter behind at all, let alone in a coma. She knows she can't make up for Max's mom leaving, but she's still going to do everything she can to try. ]

No. That's okay. Thanks, though.

[She thinks Joyce is probably trying to protect her, but Max is nothing if not perceptive. Her mom was already struggling with the bills. Probably the idea of being saddled with a huge hospital bill from Max's coma broke her and she took off. It's fine. It's not even a big deal. It wasn't like they were close.]

I'm sure she'll get here as quickly as she can once she knows you're awake. I am going to meet with your doctors this afternoon so we can decide what the next steps in your recovery are.

[ He had figured as much from the small things Max and Lucas had dropped during the course of their relationship, but somehow hearing it directly from Max in these circumstances is much, much worse. He frowns. ] Okay. Don't worry, we won't tell her anything unless we don't have any other choice.

Okay. I mean, I don't think she's gonna be around anyway so it shouldn't be an issue.

{She shrugs.]

Well, we will be.

[ If it's said a little harshly it's because Mike's never been good at hiding his judgement. He can't imagine anyone that would leave their daughter behind to deal with all of this on their own, even if they didn't know or understand everything that was really going on. ]
