[ It's sweet of Max to ask, and it reminds Buffy of her own mother. Joyce Summers had always been the picture of hospitality, at least until someone had tried to mess with one of her daughters, then all bets had been off. ]

[She's glad that Buffy agrees to hot chocolate, frankly, because it gives her something to do. She's midway through pouring the hot chocolate mix into a mug when Buffy apologizes to her. She turns to look at her to see if she's for real.]

I'm sorry. That...you died. [She bites her lower lip, heating up some water on the stove.]
[ Having something physical to keep yourself occupied during an Important Talk is something Buffy can relate to. Her brow furrows a little in concern as she watches Max for a moment, putting together some of the pieces before posing her theory. ]
Maybe. [ She's not going to sugarcoat things, but that isn't quite the whole story. ] But maybe not. You weren't the only person out there. I don't doubt there would have been someone else who needed help, and I was getting tired. If I'm being honest, I didn't have the fight in me to keep going for much longer.
[ Taking a deep breath, she looks down at her hands and could swear she still sees the scars there from two years ago. ] That isn't the first time I've died, you know.
[Max appreciates that Buffy's being honest. That she's not sugarcoating things and immediately telling her it's not her fault. She draws in a slow breath as the water comes to a boil and she turns the stovetop off, pouring it into the mug and stirring it up as she lets that sink in for a moment.]

No, I somehow managed to skip the whole death thing during the most recent apocalypse.
[ Which is still sometimes a huge surprise to her, honestly. With all the people they'd lost, surely she should have been among the numbers. The hellmouth had actually opened, all those Turok Han, Sunnydale being swallowed up by the earth... And she'd miraculously come out of it in one piece. ]
Has Faith told you much about life before we came here? About the job we both had? [ Because calling it their destiny just seems a little pretentious in these circumstances. ]
