Character name: Max Mayfield
Character journal:
beyourzoomer
Series name: Stranger Things.
Canon notes: She's from right before Vecna kills her in Season 4, Episode 9.
Species: Human
Age: 15.
Arrival Condition: She's physically fine. Mentally, much less so, as she was very much about to be killed and coma'd (however briefly that may last...)
History: Wiki link.
Personality: Max Mayfield isn't your normal 15 year old girl. She doesn't care about clothes or fashion or hair, or any "typical" girlie things society expects girls to care about. She'd rather fall off her skateboard than be caught dead in a dress, and she'd rather play video games than paint her fingernails. She does, however, draw the line when it comes to holding slimy pollywogs. She'd much rather not do that. Max refers to herself as a "Zoomer" because she zooms around on her skateboard as her main method of transportation. This comes up again later in season two when she drives her brother's car at very high speeds to help her newfound friends.
She arrives in Hawkins, Indiana, from Sunny California, with her mom, stepdad Neil, and stepbrother Billy, who is the bane of Max's existence. Billy bullied her constantly, put her down, intimidated her, grabbed her, broke her things when she didn't obey him. Domestic violence in the household was strongly indicated, not just from Billy to Max, but from Neil to Billy, as well. She walked on eggshells around Billy, and she did her best not to exhibit her fear of him. All of this has impacted Max's life a great deal, making her defensive, skeptical, and lonely.
Max doesn't hesitate in speaking her mind in most situations - or in using casual sarcasm and sass as a way of keeping people from getting too close. When she first met Dustin and Lucas, and they invited her to go trick-or-treating with them, Dustin commented that they thought she'd want in on that. She archeed her eyebrows and responded, "Well that's presumptuous of you." She then proceeded to walk away, even if she did end up meeting up with the party to trick-or-treat, scaring the crap out of them as she jumped out of the bushes dressed as Michael Myers.
She has a difficult time trusting people, even exhibiting doubt when Lucas Sinclair told her that Will Byers was lost in the woods for a week the year before. She doubted Lucas' sincerity of wanting to be her friend repeatedly - for example when the party didn't tell her about the Upside Down and what was going on with Will - she asserted that despite the guys (sans Mike Wheeler) saying they wanted to be her friends, all they did is treat her like garbage. When Lucas finally did fill her in -- telling her about everything that happened the previous year and that knowing about it is dangerous, she was certain he'd made it all up in order to try and impress her and challenged him to prove what he's saying to be true.
Despite her suspicious nature and tendency to hold people at arm's length, Max really wants nothing more than to be accepted and have her own friends, and to not be alone anymore. She asked Mike at one point why he hated her so much. When he tells her he didn't, that he just thought she was annoying and the party didn't need anyone else in it, Max told him she could be their Zoomer, and circled around him on a skateboard, trying to convince him to let her in.
She has a softer side, which really showed itself when she was on top of a trailer with Lucas in the junkyard, and she told him that her brother had always been a jerk, but for awhile now, he'd been angry all the time. She admitted that because Billy couldn't take his anger out on her mother, he took it out on her instead, even tearing up and then quickly wiping the tears away because she was embarrassed to be talking so honestly and she was afraid of seeming weak. He reassured her it was okay and that she was nothing like her brother. She then admitted that she liked talking to him This side presented again in a later episode, as she was trying to talk to Mike, telling him she understood why Eleven was the party's Mage. She smiled and her voice softened as she tried once again to befriend him, as he was the only party member who hadn't yet really accepted her presence.
She did eventually stand up for herself against Billy - compelled to do so when her stepbrother is beating the hell out of the group's newfound older friend/babysitter Steve Harrington. She jammed a syringe loaded with a sedative into his neck, drugging him til he couldn't fight anymore and he dropped onto the ground. She then picked up Steve's nail bat and threatened him with it until he agreed to leave her and her friends alone from then on. She stole his car keys and drove Lucas, Mike, Dustin, and Steve, to the tunnels where they all go to act as bait for the demogorgans/demodogs so that Eleven could close the gate to the Upside Down, thus proving her loyalty and bravery in big ways, twice in a very short time span.
After confronting her stepbrother that night, things between her and Billy were shown to calm down quite a bit. He didn't pick on her anymore; if anything they tended to avoid one another. After his death at the hands of the Mind Flayer in season 3 where he died in her arms, however, it was revealed how badly Max felt about things.
Though she hated her stepbrother, and he hated her, she never truly wanted him to die. Some part of her had always wanted a real brother-sister relationship with him, and wanted them to be friends, as she confesses at his grave. There is also a part of her that felt some amount of relief when he was gone, even if it was tiny. Watching him be killed by the Mind Flayer messed with her in a myriad of ways psychologically, causing nightmares and flashbacks. She felt immense guilt over having just stood there while he was killed, paralyzed once more with her own fear even though there was nothing she could have done realistically. It also altered everything about her life: it led to her mom and Neil having screaming fights and eventually Neil leaving, and leaving Max and her mom with very little. They ended up moving to a trailer park across town, and it led to her mom becoming an alcoholic to cope with two failed marriages and the loss of her stepson. Max began to close herself off from the others: she broke up with Lucas and kept her distance from the Party, meandering the halls of Hawkins High like a ghost. Max struggled to pick up the pieces of everything alone, unwilling to reach out for help, and frankly, not really knowing how.
Vecna targets her for these reasons, feeding on her guilt and shame and her depression. And though she's afraid and doesn't really want to die, she offers herself up as bait so that Nancy, Eddie, Robin, Steve and Dustin can go into the Upside Down to kill Vecna once and for all, and stop him from hurting/killing anyone else.
Abilities: She can probably kick your ass at video games. And teach you neat skateboarding tricks. She excels at covering up her actual feelings with sarcasm and defensiveness. Alas, no superpowers.
Personal Item: Her skateboard?
Sample: Test drive meme top level.
