OOC

• Backtagging: Yes, but beyond a couple weeks let's talk about it!
• Threadhopping: Don't mind this at all
• Fourthwalling: I'd prefer not with this fandom
• Offensive subjects: The limit does not exist

IC

• Physical contact: Hugs are okay. Keep in mind depending on canon point, she's between 13 and 15 years old so let's keep it pretty PG.

• Romance: Of the age appropriate kind, absolutely. Lucas is my favorite for her, but would also love to play out a slow-burn El romance! **None of the older characters for romance, thanks. **

• Fighting: Absolutely.

• Injuries or death: Injuries are okay. I probably won't kill her though.

• Timeline: I'm pretty flexible on this one. Between season 2 - 4. I'm caught up on canon stuff.

• Note: Canon relationships/friendships are always welcome, as are cross-canon friendships. Honestly ANY of the ST people would be great to play against!

• Note II: I make a lot of icons myself. If you also play Max, please feel free to use them, with credit. There is a severe lack of icons in this fandom, as I'm sure you've noticed. -_-

* Note III: No Rule 63 please. Just not my jam.

Warnings

• I play Max based off the things we saw in season two; meaning - her home life isn't great by any means. Parts of it were very subtle, but her family seems to be pretty deeply entrenched in the cycle of domestic violence: by both her stepdad Neil (though we only witnessed his violence against his biological son, Billy, this is RARELY the case with domestic violence), and also her stepbrother Billy. Because I literally worked at a domestic violence shelter for 15 years, this character is SO important to me, and so is an accurate portrayal of domestic violence and its effects. If this is triggering for you, please don't hesitate to opt out of playing with her.

• Max is very sassy/sarcastic and uses these things as a defense mechanism for coping with life and keeping people at arm's length. Please don't take offense if she's snappy or rude to your muse(s).

OOC PREFERENCES
CONTACT METHOD: Feel free to DM this journal or friend me on Plurk: https://www.plurk.com/xtremeroswellia
THREAD-JACKING: I love thread-jacking, so unless it's marked private, go for it.
FOURTH WALLING / CANON PUNCTURE: If it makes sense for your character, sure.
BACKTAGGING: ALways!
AVOIDED TOPICS: Not at this time that I can think of.
PREFERRED GENDER PRONOUN: She/Her

IC CHARACTERISTICS

CURRENT CANON POINT: Season 4, episode 9, right before Vecna breaks her bones, blinds and kills her. Smh.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Max is 15 years old, and is about 5'3". She has long red hair and blue eyes with a slender build. She typically wears jeans and t-shirts or hoodies/jackets and sneakers. She's NOT a girly girl at all, so no makeup or jewelry or dresses. Picture for reference.

DEMEANOR: Max is pretty guarded with most people. She also tends to be sarcastic. Even if she's not talking, her face is probably telling you what she thinks about what you're saying.

ABILITIES: She can probably kick your ass at video games. And teach you neat skateboarding tricks. She excels at covering up her actual feelings with sarcasm and defensiveness. Alas, no superpowers.

MEDICAL INFORMATION: Max has been dealing with some pretty heavy depression/anxiety issues and undiagnosed PTSD from watching her step-brother get gutted by a giant shadow monster from another dimension, and now is also dealing with being "cursed" by a monster from another dimension that essentially haunts people for awhile before killing them in really horrible ways. Good times.

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS:

Mental Health: Depression, anxiety, nightmares, PTSD and vague suicidal thoughts/references are likely to crop up in her tags as she struggles to deal with and process things she's lived through. If any of that is an issue please let me know and I'll do my best to avoid that while tagging with you.

Domestic violence: Max also grew up in a household with domestic violence; her stepdad Neil was abusive to her stepbrother Billy, and in turn Billy took a lot of his anger/issues out on Max, and occasionally on her friends. When Billy died, Neil and her mom started having a lot of fights and though the show never touched on whether that ever turned physical or not, Neil and her mother did end up divorcing. If any of this is triggery, just drop me a note and I'll do my best to avoid!

Death: A lot of Max's trauma stems from her stepbrother Billy's death so if death of a loved one is triggering for you, let me know! She was also facing her own likely impending death but is pulled from a moment before she knows for sure what happens.

Horror: She's from a horror show with monsters where a lot of weird shit happens.

OTHER: Not that I can think of right now!

IC PERMISSIONS
MENTAL: Yep she has zero defenses against this. She'll be very pissed/upset though.
MIMICRY: Well she won't LIKE it for sure. So yeah, let's discuss it first but I'm not opposed.
VIOLENCE: She once used a bat with nails to threaten her stepbrother into leaving her alone, but she's not inherently a violent person. She can probably throw a solid punch but unless you're picking on someone, she's not likely to initiate violence.
MAGIC: Yep, she has no defense against this either.
DEBATE: Absolutely!
OTHER / NOTES: For me communication is key. If you want to do something you're not sure about with her, just send me a message and we can hash it out!

IN-CHARACTER:

Character name: Max Mayfield
Character journal: [personal profile] beyourzoomer
Series name: Stranger Things.
Canon notes: She's from right before Vecna kills her in Season 4, Episode 9.
Species: Human
Age: 15.

Arrival Condition: She's physically fine. Mentally, much less so, as she was very much about to be killed and coma'd (however briefly that may last...)

History: Wiki link.

Personality: Max Mayfield isn't your normal 15 year old girl. She doesn't care about clothes or fashion or hair, or any "typical" girlie things society expects girls to care about. She'd rather fall off her skateboard than be caught dead in a dress, and she'd rather play video games than paint her fingernails. She does, however, draw the line when it comes to holding slimy pollywogs. She'd much rather not do that. Max refers to herself as a "Zoomer" because she zooms around on her skateboard as her main method of transportation. This comes up again later in season two when she drives her brother's car at very high speeds to help her newfound friends.

She arrives in Hawkins, Indiana, from Sunny California, with her mom, stepdad Neil, and stepbrother Billy, who is the bane of Max's existence. Billy bullied her constantly, put her down, intimidated her, grabbed her, broke her things when she didn't obey him. Domestic violence in the household was strongly indicated, not just from Billy to Max, but from Neil to Billy, as well. She walked on eggshells around Billy, and she did her best not to exhibit her fear of him. All of this has impacted Max's life a great deal, making her defensive, skeptical, and lonely.

Max doesn't hesitate in speaking her mind in most situations - or in using casual sarcasm and sass as a way of keeping people from getting too close. When she first met Dustin and Lucas, and they invited her to go trick-or-treating with them, Dustin commented that they thought she'd want in on that. She archeed her eyebrows and responded, "Well that's presumptuous of you." She then proceeded to walk away, even if she did end up meeting up with the party to trick-or-treat, scaring the crap out of them as she jumped out of the bushes dressed as Michael Myers.

She has a difficult time trusting people, even exhibiting doubt when Lucas Sinclair told her that Will Byers was lost in the woods for a week the year before. She doubted Lucas' sincerity of wanting to be her friend repeatedly - for example when the party didn't tell her about the Upside Down and what was going on with Will - she asserted that despite the guys (sans Mike Wheeler) saying they wanted to be her friends, all they did is treat her like garbage. When Lucas finally did fill her in -- telling her about everything that happened the previous year and that knowing about it is dangerous, she was certain he'd made it all up in order to try and impress her and challenged him to prove what he's saying to be true.

Despite her suspicious nature and tendency to hold people at arm's length, Max really wants nothing more than to be accepted and have her own friends, and to not be alone anymore. She asked Mike at one point why he hated her so much. When he tells her he didn't, that he just thought she was annoying and the party didn't need anyone else in it, Max told him she could be their Zoomer, and circled around him on a skateboard, trying to convince him to let her in.

She has a softer side, which really showed itself when she was on top of a trailer with Lucas in the junkyard, and she told him that her brother had always been a jerk, but for awhile now, he'd been angry all the time. She admitted that because Billy couldn't take his anger out on her mother, he took it out on her instead, even tearing up and then quickly wiping the tears away because she was embarrassed to be talking so honestly and she was afraid of seeming weak. He reassured her it was okay and that she was nothing like her brother. She then admitted that she liked talking to him This side presented again in a later episode, as she was trying to talk to Mike, telling him she understood why Eleven was the party's Mage. She smiled and her voice softened as she tried once again to befriend him, as he was the only party member who hadn't yet really accepted her presence.

She did eventually stand up for herself against Billy - compelled to do so when her stepbrother is beating the hell out of the group's newfound older friend/babysitter Steve Harrington. She jammed a syringe loaded with a sedative into his neck, drugging him til he couldn't fight anymore and he dropped onto the ground. She then picked up Steve's nail bat and threatened him with it until he agreed to leave her and her friends alone from then on. She stole his car keys and drove Lucas, Mike, Dustin, and Steve, to the tunnels where they all go to act as bait for the demogorgans/demodogs so that Eleven could close the gate to the Upside Down, thus proving her loyalty and bravery in big ways, twice in a very short time span.

After confronting her stepbrother that night, things between her and Billy were shown to calm down quite a bit. He didn't pick on her anymore; if anything they tended to avoid one another. After his death at the hands of the Mind Flayer in season 3 where he died in her arms, however, it was revealed how badly Max felt about things.

Though she hated her stepbrother, and he hated her, she never truly wanted him to die. Some part of her had always wanted a real brother-sister relationship with him, and wanted them to be friends, as she confesses at his grave. There is also a part of her that felt some amount of relief when he was gone, even if it was tiny. Watching him be killed by the Mind Flayer messed with her in a myriad of ways psychologically, causing nightmares and flashbacks. She felt immense guilt over having just stood there while he was killed, paralyzed once more with her own fear even though there was nothing she could have done realistically. It also altered everything about her life: it led to her mom and Neil having screaming fights and eventually Neil leaving, and leaving Max and her mom with very little. They ended up moving to a trailer park across town, and it led to her mom becoming an alcoholic to cope with two failed marriages and the loss of her stepson. Max began to close herself off from the others: she broke up with Lucas and kept her distance from the Party, meandering the halls of Hawkins High like a ghost. Max struggled to pick up the pieces of everything alone, unwilling to reach out for help, and frankly, not really knowing how.

Vecna targets her for these reasons, feeding on her guilt and shame and her depression. And though she's afraid and doesn't really want to die, she offers herself up as bait so that Nancy, Eddie, Robin, Steve and Dustin can go into the Upside Down to kill Vecna once and for all, and stop him from hurting/killing anyone else.

Abilities: She can probably kick your ass at video games. And teach you neat skateboarding tricks. She excels at covering up her actual feelings with sarcasm and defensiveness. Alas, no superpowers.

Personal Item: Her skateboard?

Sample: Test drive meme top level.

For @openthreeinches

Hawkins, Indiana, isn't such a bad place at first glance. It's quieter than Ventura, by a lot. There aren't any beaches, and frankly, not a ton to do, and Billy hates her because they moved. Not that he hadn't hated her before, but it's definitely worse these days.

School isn't all that different than it is from back home, except she doesn't know anyone and doesn't have any friends, and there are some weird boys who keep staring at her every time they're around, and she's pretty sure a couple of them have been following her off and on throughout the week.

Weirdos.

She's heading outside for lunch when she hears laughter from down the hallway. She's heading that way, anyway, so when she comes around a crowd of people and sees a blonde girl and a couple of her friends laughing at a pretty brunette girl who's holding an art project of some kind, she narrows her eyes a little, glancing around.

The brunette -- Jane -- is new to this school, too. She'd been introduced in Max's English class, and had moved to hide in the back a couple rows over from Max right after being introduced. And the blonde. Well. Max doesn't know her but she's already picked up on the fact that the girl isn't very nice.

"Aww, poor Plain Jane. Are you gonna cry?" the blonde taunts, and frankly it does look like the other girl is about to cry, and Max knows from experience that is going to make things so much worse. Her shoulders are tense and she straightens a little.

"Yeah, she's gonna cry," one of the blonde's friends says with a laugh.

And that's about all of it that Max can stomach so she pushes her way through the crowd, focusing on Jane. "Hey, there you are, Jane. Ready to head to lunch?" Her voice is nonchalant as she deliberately turns her back to the blonde and her asshole friends.

Character Information

Canon: Stranger Things
Character Name: Maxine "Max" Mayfield
Canon Point: Post-episode six, "The Spy."
History: Here
CRAU History: CRAU: The Quiet Place

Max arrived in Reims, a place where you had to be quiet or draw the attention of monsters attracted to noise called Sound Eaters. She worked full time quiet maintenance, helping keep the town as soundproof as possible. Aside from work, she stayed in the house a lot for awhile, but eventually started overcoming her fear and started going on trips to observe the Sound Eaters, and went on a mission with a large group that was attempting to capture one to determine its weaknesses. Thanks to the help of a few people she met there, she began to learn how to fight if she needed to so she could defend herself. She also learned how to fish without making much noise, and how to clean fish, and how to hunt and trap rabbits. Toward the end of her stay in Reims, Max ended up becoming a vegetarian.

Character Details

Personality (Aspiration/Drive): Survival. Unlike her friends from Hawkins, Max's instincts tell her to go the opposite way of obvious danger. She very much wants to remain alive. She also has a very deep seated fear of being rejected/left behind/left out so she tries to be helpful when people she cares about need help.

Personality (Worldview/Alignment): Chaotic Good. Max is inherently good at heart, and she wants to do the right thing. But she may go about it in a different way than most might. She's not one to go along with the crowd just because everyone else is. She has her own path that she follows and she doesn't care if people judge her for it. She has a difficult time trusting most people, especially adults, though kids don't get her trust without earning it, either. She doesn't give people the benefit of the doubt without reason.

Personality (Traits):

Loyalty: Once Max has decided someone is trustworthy, they'll have her loyalty until the time that they break that trust. Whether or not she necessarily believes everything they say without evidence, she'll go along with things and help them without asking TOO many questions.

Sarcastic: Sarcasm may as well be Max's middle name. She can and does wield it like a weapon often, both to keep people at arm's length and to hide her own feelings.

Courageous: While she's not apt to be leading a group into a dangerous situation, when it comes to her friends being in trouble, she'll face dangerous situations and people head on.

Independent: Max is fiercely independent, hesitating to lean too much on any one person. Some of this was in response to her abusive stepbrother scaring off her friends and forcing her to be alone most of the time. This is how she wound up being so good at both skateboarding and arcade games.

Jaded: Between her parents' divorce and the introduction of her new step-family, Max has a lot of anger and bitterness that occasionally causes her to lash out at people. It taints her view of the world, making her believe that most people aren't trustworthy until they prove themselves otherwise. Even when that happens, it takes her awhile to really let her guard down and open up to someone.

Inventory:

Sling
Green tunic
Rune bracelet

Offerings

Memory Loss: Max won't remember anyone from Reims except for CR in the game at first. The rest of her memories of people and other significant events from there will come back through rewards.
Runic Mark: Eihwaz
Skills and Abilities:

- Max does have some basic fighting abilities thanks to her time in Reims.
- She has good balance because of all the time she's spent on her skateboard.
- Her hand/eye coordination is on point from all the video game playing.

Other skills and abilities include:

- Lock-picking
- Kicking ass at Dig Dug
- Skateboarding

Canon Point: S2, Episode 1, "MADMAX."

In-Game Tattoo Placement: Right hip
Current Health/Status: Healthy!
Apparent Age: 13/14
Actual Age: 13
Species: Human

History: Max Mayfield
Hometown/World: Earth. Somewhere in California. Until the show reveals otherwise, if they ever do, I go with Santa Barbara as her hometown. But she's just moved to Hawkins, Indiana, with her family.

Personality: Max Mayfield isn't your normal 13 year old girl. She doesn't care about clothes or fashion or hair, or any "typical" girlie things society expects girls to care about. She'd rather fall off her skateboard than be caught dead in a dress, and she'd rather play video games than paint her fingernails. Billy bullies her constantly, putting her down, intimidating her, grabbing her, breaking her things when she doesn't obey him. Domestic violence in the household is strongly indicated, not just from Billy to Max, but from Neil to Billy, as well. (Season 2, Episode 9, "The Gate.") She walks on eggshells around Billy, and she does her best not to exhibit her fear of him. All of this has impacted Max's life a great deal, making her defensive, skeptical, and lonely.

Max doesn't hesitate in speaking her mind in most situations - or in using casual sarcasm and sass as a way of keeping people from getting too close. (Season 2, Episode 4, "Will the Wise.") When Lucas finally does fill her in -- telling her about everything that happened the previous year and that knowing about it is dangerous, she's certain he's made it all up in order to try and impress her and challenges him to prove what he's saying to be true (Season 2, Episode 5, "Dig Dug.")

Despite her suspicious nature and tendency to hold people at arm's length, Max really wants nothing more than to be accepted by the party and have her own friends, and to not be alone anymore. This side presents again in a later episode, as she's trying to talk to Mike, telling him she understands why Eleven was the party's Mage. (Season 2, Episode 9, "The Gate.")

Personal Moral Codes:

If Max had an "alignment" D&D style, it would likely be chaotic good. She's not someone who's going to necessarily go along with the crowd just because it's what everyone else is doing. She has her own path that she follows and she doesn't care all that much about other people judging her for it.

Max is not an inherently violent individual, but she's surrounded by violence between her stepdad and her stepbrother. She won't hesitate to defend herself or people she cares about against most people, but at the end of the day she has no desire to truly harm anyone.

She very much thinks that boys and girls are equal and should be treated as such.

She has some reservations/wariness about adults even though she's generally respectful toward them.

Once someone earns her trust, they also have her loyalty until the point that they do something that really breaks her trust in them. She'll put herself on the line for someone she cares about and trusts.

Insecurities/Personal Demons:

*Fear of her stepbrother: Billy takes his anger out on her and he controls a lot of what she does and doesn't do, and she is legitimately afraid of him. He's like a shadow that hovers over her even when he's not physically present.

*Fear of becoming an abusive asshole LIKE her stepbrother. She knows that her tongue is a weapon and she uses it even if not to the degree that Billy does. She walks a fine line between being a sarcastic teenager and becoming someone as angry as her stepbrother, who takes her anger out on those around her.

*Fear of rejection/being alone. She hasn't had friends for awhile, thanks to Billy scaring them off. She fears being alone even as she pushes people away to protect herself from risking getting hurt - or them getting hurt if they get too close.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses: She can probably kick your ass at video games. And teach you neat skateboarding tricks. She excels at covering up her actual feelings with sarcasm and defensiveness. Alas, no superpowers.

Ability/Power/Magic Warping: N/A.
